Description:

We have been informed by Newcastle City Council that on Sunday 26 January 2020, the annual Chinese New Year celebrations will be taking place in the City Centre.  As a result of the celebrations, a number of minor roads in the city centre will be subject to closure between 10:45 and 17:00, however none of these minor closures affect our services.

In addition to the main celebrations there will be two parades held on the day, the first between 10:45and 11:45 will require Blackett Street, Gallowgate and Percy Street to be closed and buses will divert as follows:

  • Services 12, 39, 40, 62 and 63 towards Byker – will follow normal route to St James’ Boulevard before diverting Westgate Road, Grainger Street, Market Street and the Hole in the Wall, re-joining the normal route at New Bridge Street.  These services will stop on Grainger Street (outside Maybrook House) and on Market Street (outside the Old Tourist Information office).
  • Services 12, 39, 40, 62 and 63 from City Centre – will operate as normal via New Bridge Street before diverting via Market Street, Grainger Street, Neville Street and St James’ Boulevard, re-joining the normal route on Barrack Road.  These services will stop on Market Street (opposite the Old Tourist Information office) and Barrack Road (St James’ Park). 
  • Service 71/72/87 towards City Centre – will run as normal via Westgate Road into Grainger Street where the service will terminate.
  • Service 71/72/87 towards North Walbottle/Chapel House – will commence service from the normal stop on Grainger Street, running non-stop via Grainger Street, Market Street, New Bridge Street West, Pilgrim Street, Market Street, Grainger Street, Neville Street and St James’ Boulevard, before re-joining the normal route on Barrack Road. Passengers should use the normal stop on Grainger Street for all journeys out of the City Centre. 
  • Service 36 towards City Centre – will operate as normal via Richardson Road but will terminate at St. Thomas’ Street.  (Service 36 will turn at Eldon Square Bus Station but will not drop off or pick up passengers). 
  • Service 36 towards Fenham – will start service at St. Thomas’ Street before running as normal via Richardson Road towards Fenham.
  • Service 100 towards City Centre – will run as normal via the Redheugh Bridge and St James’ Boulevard before diverting via Westgate Road, Grainger Street, Market Street, John Dobson Street and New Bridge Street West, re-joining the normal route at Pilgrim Street.
  • Service 100 towards Metrocentre – will follow its normal route out of the City Centre.

The second parade will take place between 15:00 and 15:30 and will close the section of Westgate Road between St James’ Boulevard and Thornton Street with services diverting as follows:

  • Services 10, 11, 38 and 38A towards City Centre – will run as normal down Westgate Road before diverting via St James’ Boulevard, Neville Street and Clayton Street West, re-joining the normal route on Westgate Road at the O2 Academy. Services will return to normal and roads will re-open as soon as the parades have cleared the routes.
  • Services 71, 72 and 87 towards City Centre – will run down Barrack Road as normal before diverting via St James’ Boulevard, Neville Street and Clayton Street West before re-joining the normal route on Westgate Road at the O2 Academy. Services will return to normal and roads will re-open as soon as the parades have cleared the routes.
