Virgin Azuma Train Arrives In Middlesbrough

The new Azuma train for Virgin Trains East Coast arrived from Japan last week ahead of starting services in December 2018.

The new 5 car trains arrived at Teesport in Middlesbrough after a 2 month journey from Japan to the UK. The two trains which arrived at Teesport are five-car hybrids, able to run on both electric and diesel power (train numbers 800201 & 800202).

Hitachi who are making the trains at a factory in Newton Aycliffe built these test trains in Japan before the remainder are built here in the UK.

They will head to Edinburgh ready for testing and crew training, whilst being shown off at Edinburgh Waverley station too.

Azuma trains to enter passenger service from December 2018 offering greater peak time capacity, faster and more frequent journeys. The fleet of 65 trains will provide an extra 12,200 seats. It will offer the potential to enable faster journeys and support a big increase in through services from London including the introduction of a direct service to/from Middlesbrough and the recent introduction of a direct Sunderland service.
