Shortlisted Bidders For Tyne & Wear Fleet Renewal
Five companies have been shortlisted to build a new fleet for Tyne & Wear Metro. The choice follows a selection questionnaire which was circulated within the rolling stock industry earlier this year. The questionnaire is used as part of the decision that Nexus will use to choose a preferred bidder before the end of next year.
The DfT has issued a grant of £337 million towards the capital cost of the fleet, which is estimated at £362 million.
The five shortlisted firms are Bombardier UK, CAF, Downer EDI Rail, Hitachi and Stadler.
It is hoped once a preferred bidder is selected, the first examples of the 42 new trains will be in service by 2021.
The current units are over 40 years old, and date back to 1980 when the first Metro line opened. Although Nexus have done a great job refurbishing these, new trains are needed to keep the service on track.
The contract also includes a new maintenance depot at Gosforth, and all the new trains should be in service by 2024.
