Durham Tees Valley Airport Under New Ownership

Small, regional airport Durham Tees Valley airport is under new ownership as it joins The Stobart Group.

The local airport is now under public ownership and will be operated by The Stobart Group who have a stake in the airport. The remainder of the airport is owned by the Tees Valley Cominded Authority, which is made up of Darlington Borough Council, Hartlepool Borough Council, Middlesbrough Council, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Counci.

The Stobary Group already has great success down south, with London Southend airport. Before the group took over the running of the airport, London Southend had about 4000 passengers year in 2008 and today has over 1 million passengers each year. The group has also taken over full ownership of Carlisle Lake District airport which is set to re-introduce scheduled passenger flights with Loganair this July.

They now see similar success with Durham Tees Valley airport, which currently has around 140,000 passengers per year with plans to increase this to 1.4 million by 2022.

In addition, The Stobart Group has recently joined forces with Virgin Atlantic as part of a consortium to purchase regional airline Flybe. Could this potentially assist with increasing Durham Tees Valley routes? Only time will tell so keep watching
