***STORY FROM THE NEXUS WEBSITE***
The North East Joint Transport Committee (JTC) has formally approved the North East Transport Plan, setting out a £6.8bn plan to revitalise regional transport, delivering a green transport revolution for the North East.
Today, Tuesday 16 March, the Committee has signed off the ambitious plan, setting out the region-wide action plan for strategic transport investment up to 2035.
The North East Transport Plan outlines transport policy and objectives for the area alongside a live programme of 243 schemes across public transport, active travel, rail, road and more.
Schemes include new bus and Metro stations, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, enhancing cycling and walking provision across the region, the reopening of the Leamside Line in full and more.
Cllr Martin Gannon, Chair of the North East Joint Transport Committee, said: “This is a monumental achievement for the region, we have worked together to coordinate a unified plan which will be game-changing for the people of the North East.
“Creating a more efficient, green transport network will stimulate significant growth in the local economy, generating more high-quality jobs which will give people in the North East a better quality of life. With this plan we’re showing our carbon-neutral objectives, driving sustainable transport options which will improve our environment, and indeed public health and well-being, as people adopt greener ways to travel, such as by public transport or by walking or cycling.
“We want to deliver the whole programme we have outlined here which is achievable, but we need Government to provide funding needed to make these plans a reality. I am proud that the North East Joint Transport Committee has now delivered this impactful strategy for the region and I am sure it is the start of more exciting things to come for us all.”
